How to Setup IMAP with Gmail Accounts

To use IMAP with your Gmail account, you must enable IMAP, enable 2FA, and create an app password. Learn how to configure your Gmail account to support any application that uses IMAP in this guide!

IMAP Settings for Gmail Accounts

1. If you have already created an app password and enabled 2FA on your account and want to add your Gmail Account to an email program that supports IMAP, here are the server settings you can use.

  • Email/Username: Your Gmail Account email address
  • Password: Your Gmail Account app password
  • IMAP Server/Host:
  • IMAP Port: 993
  • IMAP Encryption: TLS
  • Requires SSL: Yes / True

2. If you still need to create an app password and enable 2FA, follow the guide below!

Enabling IMAP on Gmail Accounts

1. Navigate to the Forwarding and Pop Gmail Settings page via this link.

2. Scroll down to the IMAP access section. Click the Enable IMAP checkbox.

3. Click the Save Changes button. You have successfully enabled IMAP on your Gmail account!

Enabling 2FA on Gmail Accounts

1. Navigate to the Google Authenticator page via this link.

2. In the search bar, type 2-step and select the 2-Step Verification option in the dropdown menu. 

3. Scroll down to the How you sign in to Google section and click the 2-Step Verification option.

4. Click the Get Started button. 

5. Select a method to use for 2-Step Verification. You can send prompts to your phone or use one of the other available options.

6. When you are ready, click the Continue button and setup 2FA with your selected device.

7. You have successfully enabled 2FA on your account. Now, you can create an app password!

Create an App Password on Gmail Accounts

1. Navigate to the Google My Account page via this link.

2. In the search bar, type app password and select the App passwords option in the dropdown menu. 

3. Specify a name for your app password in the App name field. Then click the Create button.

4. Save your app password somewhere safe. You can now use your app password on an email client like Inbox!
